Shuar Culture

Shuar culture known for its famous reductions heads, was a culture that was among the jungle of Peru and Ecuador. It was a wild and strong culture. Neither the Inca culture, nor the Spanish were able to conquer the Shuar territory. In 1490 rejected the Incas and in 1549 became the first Spanish incursions fail so that the Spanish named them jibaros as a synonym of feral wild. When culture Shuar tribes fought over territory, the chiefs were fighting between themselves and the winner coming out reducing your opponent's head to see his victory.

The reduction of heads was a major ceremonial tradition in the Shuar culture. It consisted of a series of procedures and took the place after a successful victory against an opponent. The procedures for the reduction of head first was a cut from the neck which never served as a hole to extract the brain, eyes and the skull. The hair-bearing skin was boiled (for the skin to shrink and will not take off the hair). After a while the hair-bearing skin was removed from the water and extracted the remains of meat to avoid bad smell. Smeared with oil carapa when it was dry. Holes were sewn on the face (eyes, mouth) and finally introduced a stone the size of a hand and head completely closed thus being reduced. The hanging on their belts as trophies of war. They were true warriors, great fighters.
